Collaboration to Improve Access to Care
Managed care organizations across the Commonwealth have the opportunity to form a Virginia E-Consult Consortium to increase access to care for patients in Medicaid. This consortium will be open to primary care providers, payers and other stakeholders interested in implementing electronic consult, or asynchronous telehealth between treating providers (PCPs) and consulting providers (specialists). The consortium can provide e-consult education, best practices, networking opportunities and technical assistance to providers and patient advocates.
Virginia E-Consult Consortium Objectives
- Organizations collaborate to solve key issues and support program spread.
- Provider champions share the benefits and value proposition of e-consult to facilitate and use.
- Progress and outcomes are tracked and shared to demonstrate e-consult value and impact.
Health Care Provider Benefits

- E-consult rollout support for providers, staff and IT teams

Provider Spotlight

HealthWorks is the first FQHC to launch e-consult as part of the Consortium. Kudos to Stephanie Puloka, MD, Tonya Adkins, MD and team for leading the way for primary care providers across the state to address challenges in accessing specialty care for their Medicaid and uninsured patients.
“As a community health center serving many uninsured and underinsured patients, e-consults are a game changer. They allow our providers to connect with specialists for vital management insights without requiring patients to miss work, secure transportation, or arrange childcare. This innovation helps us break down barriers to care and ensures our underserved patients get the timely support they need.” - Dr. Adkins
