HIV Care Meets Telehealth: a Review of Successes, Disparities, and Unresolved Challenges
Telehealth adoption in HIV care delivery in the USA has been successful. Despite this success, racial minority groups, older adults, and individuals with low telehealth literacy face remaining challenges. A lack of broadband access, compatible devices, standardization, and government regulations of telehealth in HIV care contribute to poor patient-provider experience and utilization. New approaches to telehealth must be considered to acknowledge gaps in telehealth literacy and broadband access to sustaining telehealth for HIV care. Recommendations include investment in equity in broadband access, particularly in rural regions to improve telehealth delivery and patient-provider experience. Electronic consult can be considered as an approach to sustainably delivering HIV care to patients living in remote areas of the state or with barriers to being physically present for a medical visit.
